Manual Therapy
What is Manual Therapy?
Manual therapy, or a “hands-on” approach to physiotherapy, leads to an improved movement of a joint. Manual therapy may consist of mobilizations or manipulations.
How does Manual Therapy work?
A mobilization is a passive movement that occurs at the joint. This technique requires a joint to be taken within, or to, the end of range without going past the end of range. With mobilizations, there is usually NOT a cavitation, or “crack”, produced. When mobilizations are being completed, patients will feel pressure over and around the affected area requires treatment but also the surrounding regions.
A manipulation is a movement that requires a joint to be taken to the end range position at which point, a low-amplitude, high-velocity thrust, is applied. Often, a manipulation will result in a cavitation, or “a crack”, and patients quite often report a decrease in pain with this cavitation. The purpose of a mobilization or a manipulation technique is to decrease pain, increase range of motion and increase function of a fixated joint.
