Dyspareunia (pain with intercourse)
What is Dyspareunia?
Dyspareunia, or pain with intercourse, is a very common issue among women. Patients struggling with dyspareunia usually have an increase in muscle tone within their pelvic floor.
What happens in the assessment?
A thorough pelvic floor assessment is completed including an in-depth subjective assessment followed by an external pelvic assessment and an internal pelvic assessment.
If, for some reason, an internal assessment can’t be completed the first day because of pain, there are many other assessment techniques that can be completed. A pelvic floor relaxation program usually begins the first day of assessment.
Usually, the goal of patients with dyspareunia is to see a change in the high level of tone in their pelvic floor.
